March 23, 2016

Last week was a little quiet in the XGen offices, as the majority of our team was out at GDC in San Francisco, where we set up an exhibitor booth so we could put the first publicly playable demo of The Low Road into players' hands. It was great being able to get the team together in one place again, and meeting fans new and old as we showed off the game -- we made a lot of new friends, and met a lot of great people working in the industry~

During our downtime in San Francisco, we visited a variety of tourist hotspots, including Pier 39, Musée Mécanique, and The San Francisco Dungeon. The dungeon was especially interesting as we got to learn about how easily Kaelyn gets scared, and how Leif giggles like a simpleton when he gets singled out for a "demonstration" in front of everybody :) And thanks to Eric's vast knowledge of prime eating establishments, we got to eat at a whole bunch of great restaurants that we'll not soon forget.

It all was really exciting and extremely exhausting at the same time, but we're really stoked about all the positive comments we've received from the media, gamers, and the other exhibitors at the show. Actually, just this morning we heard from one such media outlet that has put together their first impressions of The Low Road from GDC: The Game Advocate

We've received a ton of useful feedback from everybody who played our game, and are feverishly working to tweak things and add content before we take it out to demo again at GDX Edmonton on May 7th & 8th -- we invite anybody interested to come say Hi to us at our booth and try out the game!

March 8, 2016

It's crunch week at XGen! We are working our butts off to polish our demo of The Low Road for GDC 2016 in San Francisco. Yesterday we received the great news that The Low Road has been awarded a "Best In Play" award for GDC Play 2016! We are so excited to exhibit an early production demo at GDC Play (booth #PL303) and this award is just the motivation we need as we tie up some loose ends on the demo. Up until now The Low Road has been a pretty well kept secret, we've showed only a couple screen shots here and there, but that ends today: we've released some early production footage on our YouTube page and The game is still in production and we're not ready to announce a release date yet, but we can't wait to share with you the progress we've made in the coming weeks and months! Stay tuned!

Howdy! ...

January 26, 2016

My name is Kaelyn and I am the wife of Skye Boyes and newly-appointed CEO. I have been working with XGen on the business side for many years and have accompanied Skye to a few GDCs in San Francisco, Taipei & E3 Los Angeles. I love working with the brilliant and creative XGen team on a daily basis; they are the ones who encouraged me to finally make an online introduction.

My background involves doing business operations for various organizations, along with my formal educational training in Business, Sociology, and most recently, Interior Design. I would not describe myself as an avid gamer but an avid game watcher! As a deeply competitive person, the idea of playing games against an experienced opponent like Skye always felt like a losing proposition and best to be avoided. However, my parents are quick to remind me that I was addicted to Mario Brothers as a child and have video evidence of this fact through home movies (a bit of trivia which Skye loved).

Right now, the XGen team is diligently working on our upcoming episodic graphic adventure series, The Low Road. This March, Scott, Jordan, Jed, and I will be traveling to San Francisco for GDC 2016 to demo our first episode at GDC Play (booth #PL303). We invite GDC attendees to visit us at the XGen booth to test the game out before its expected release date in the fourth quarter of this year.

We would also like to pass on a video we are featuring called "Mining on Mars" by Matt Shea. As Matt states “Mine resources, make money, MINE MORE” what more would you want? Thanks for the video, Matt!

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a...

December 15, 2015

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a preemptive Happy New Year to you all! Whatever it is you may be celebrating, we hope you are having an excellent December.

Saint Nicolas is one heck of a snappy dresser. If I were you I'd cross "Apple Watch" off of your wish list and replace it with a "SpyGauge 7600". Santa knows his wearable tech. Along with our Christmas Card, we're also excited to offer a discount on our games this holiday season. By entering the promo code HOLIDAY2015 at checkout you'll receive 10% off! This offer will self destruct on January 4th, so be quick!

You may have noticed the brand new "Featured Let's Play" section. Every so often we'll pick our favourite video of someone playing an XGen game to highlight on our main page. The first featured video is from MattShea. He's putting together a series of videos on Stick RPG 2 and it's been hilarious watching him explore Paper Thin City for the first time.

If you want us to feature your Let's Play video of an XGen game — tweet us! We love all of your videos, but the ones with the best production value will have a better chance of being featured.

November 26, 2015

I hope all of our American friends are having a happy Thanksgiving! Thank you so much for all of your support over the past month and a bit. It has been really touching to hear stories about how Skye will be remembered and how the games he made had an impact on your lives. Stories like these, big and small, are one of the many things that will help motivate us in the years to come as we continue to build upon Skye's incredible legacy. In the mood of Thanksgiving, I'd like to share the speech with you that I wrote for Skye's memorial. Those of you who have felt the impact of this loss may be interested in reading about Skye from the perspective of a co-worker and friend.

It's much too long to post on the main page, so head on over to the forums to give it a read.

Remembering Skye ...

October 16, 2015

Remembering Skye

It is with a great sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news that XGen’s founder and CEO, Skye Boyes, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 12, 2015.

We at XGen have lost a brilliant leader, an inspiring mentor, loving husband, and a dear friend. Those of us who were lucky enough to know and work with Skye will remember his warm sense of generosity, his boundless enthusiasm, and the inspiring creative vision he managed to bring to each endeavour.

Skye was incredibly grateful to the passionate fans that followed his career all the way from the early days of programming flash games in his basement to one of his proudest achievements; launching a game alongside the PlayStation 4. He has built an incredible legacy for himself and we at XGen are committed to both preserving and extending that legacy on his behalf.

If you would like to share your thoughts, sympathies, and remembrances we encourage you to do so on the forums at the link below.

Thank you for your kindness and continuing support,

- Kaelyn Boyes and the XGen team

Greetings XGennonites! ...

July 24, 2015

Greetings XGennonites!

My name is Leif Oleson-Cormack and I’m here to introduce myself as the lead writer for XGen’s upcoming adventure game series.

For the past four months, I’ve had the tremendous pleasure of creating characters, devising puzzles, and building worlds with the uber-talented folks here at XGen. While this is my first project for the company as a writer, you can hear some of my voice-over work in some of XGen’s more recent titles (I played the tutorial narrator in “Defend Your Castle” as well as the cantankerous Karl Redden in "Super Motherload”).

As a writer, most of my work has been in the realm of theatre, with occasional dabbling in film and television. I was recently a fellow in Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwrights program at The Juilliard School and my full-length play, “Dead Peasants” was the winner of Samuel French’s Canadian Playwrights Contest. Some of the places my work has been staged include Shadow Theatre, Northern Light Theatre, Signature Theatre, Ignite! Festival, The Edmonton Fringe Festival, and the Saskatchewan Playwrights Centre Festival.

My most formative experiences as a gamer came from obsessively re-playing point-and-click LucasArts adventure games as a child. Because of this, I’ve always admired games that possess clearly defined characters, intricate storylines, and strong senses of humor. With this new project, I’m hoping we can build upon these principles to create a completely new and engrossing gaming experience that will be able to stand proudly alongside XGen’s rich library of titles.

Hello World! ...

January 7, 2015

Hello World!

My name is Jed Lang, and I'm the newest addition to the team -- in the capacity of Lead Developer. I thought I should say hello to the community, and give you guys a little background about myself so you can get a better idea of who just joined XGen Studios~

I'm a 100% self-taught programmer, and have been programming for about 16 years, touching on more than a couple handfuls of languages, and dozens of technologies. I've done development in a variety of areas, including business software, video games, and tools. I'm hoping I can make a positive contribution to the XGen team going forward!

I generally spend my free time reverse engineering video games that don't have mod support, and developing modding tools for those games. The biggest thing you might know me from on the internet is my side project called DSMODT - A Dark Souls modding tool. This tool also put me on Kotaku when I used it to put a boss from another game into Dark Souls.

I look forward to working with the XGen team going forward, and if the community is even half as warm and welcoming, I'm going to feel right at home here.

Vinyl OST for Super Motherload - ...

Vinyl OST for Super Motherload -
Hey! I just wanted to let you know that my soundtrack for Super Motherload is now out on vinyl. The positive reception this soundtrack has been given since its release last year has been so encouraging and generous, and being able to now have it available on a format I believe brings a different perspective to the listening experience is really an honour. My main goal in making this soundtrack was that the music had to sound fun. So playing with the world the game is set in (so much of which XGen Studios’ artist Scott Carmichael developed visually and which is on display on the cover and inside this album), I felt like it really made sense to explore campy science fiction and horror themes in the realm of dance, electronic and pop music. While making this soundtrack, I was listening to a lot of new electronic music from places like the Fade to Mind, Nightslugs and UNO rosters while going through Billboard Hot 100s from the 70s and 80s. It was a really fun exploration for me then, and I’m very excited to share new music I’m working on with you soon!

If you’ve had a chance to play Super Motherload and hear the music, thank you. Another huge thank you if you’ve purchased a digital copy of the soundtrack or shown a friend or reached out to me. Your support made it possible to print this run of vinyl. If you’ve already purchased a digital copy and would now like to buy the vinyl, I’d like to offer you credit on the vinyl for the amount you’ve already paid. Please first send me an email at with your digital copy proof of purchase and I will send you a discount code for the amount you’ve already paid, which you can then apply at the time of purchase.

Digital and vinyl copies of the Super Motherload OST are available from Bandcamp.
